Component Implementation

Fall 2012

Individual Project

Instructor - Greg Thomson

Beginning at the component scale, an investigation of the collegtion of water was undergone. Using the unique surface tension property of water, the component shape and waterila was tested at 1:1 scale of the building component. Through a series of concrete castings, the component shape was tested for water collection when placed at various angles. The componenet shape was developed into a singular form, shape, and material that could be mounted to the facade of a building at a variety of different angles. This created a system that can determine the amount of natural lighting let into the space while also being able to respond to the various angles of deflection of rain due to seasonal wind patterns. Through analysis of the building massing on the site, the component could be installed on the facade in the most effective way to collect rainwater while providing sufficient natural light into the programmatic spaces.
